Welcome Gillian!

Gobabeb is excited to welcome our new Director, Dr Gillian Maggs-Kölling. A plant taxonomist by training, Gillian has spent her career in government where she worked to promote botany and its appropriate applications in a previously livestock-orientated agricultural research system. Gillianworked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry for 26 years, firstly at the National Botanical Research Institute (Directorate of Agricultural Research and Training) and then as the Deputy Director of Forest Research (Directorate of Forestry). She is taking over from Acting Director, Dr Mary Seely, who directed Gobabeb from 1970 to 1998 and is a long-time associate and board member.

GobaDash 2012

Gobabeb is proud to have hosted its first ever cycle event on the 10th of November, in conjunction with the Coastal Cycling Club and sponsored by Namibia Asset Management Limited and Swakop Uranium. The event offered three distances for the riders to choose from, all of which started and ended at Gobabeb. Some of our Topnaar staff took part and did well! May next year’s cycle race be bigger and better

AZEF 2012

AZEF 2012

One of Gobabeb’s young researchers, Miya Kabajani, attended the Arid zone Ecology Forum conference in Worcester, South Africa. About a hundred delegates listened to presentations ranging from vegetation studies to climate change. Miya presented her project investigating the habitat selection of the endemic Husab sand Lizard and received the first prize for the best poster presentation by a student or young scientist.....

Open Day

Open Day - 50 Years

Fifty years of research and training – a record of which Gobabeb is indeed proud. Open Day, held on September 22, provided the opportunity for the Centre to present itself to its fellow Namibians – and a few international visitors as well – 300 people in all. The Open Day celebration highlighted our environment and its wonderful comparative research and training opportunities. But, it doesn’t stop there – the 50-years celebration continues. We look forward to our next 50 years and hope you will all be there to enjoy the celebration.
