One of Gobabeb’s research collaborators, Prof Scott Turner, from State University New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, USA, will be giving a lecture on Tuesday 17 July for the Swakopmund Scientific Society.

Gobabeb gets a new Borehole

Gobabeb has a new borehole. Last week, representatives from NamWater and Human Drilling Contractors spent three days drilling a new borehole to replace the current one in providing the Centre’s water supply.

May YES to be held at Sossusvlei

Gobabeb training staff have started preparing for the fourth Youth Environmental Summit this coming May. The YES is an environmental science education programme that brings together 30 grade 11 learners for a week of intensive fieldwork with Gobabeb-affiliated researchers to learn about the scientific process through hands-on experience.

The Kuiseb Flows Past Gobabeb

Last Friday morning, 28 February 2014, Gobabeb staff woke to something seen by only a few lucky people: flowing water in the Kuiseb River. The Centre was first notified that there was water in the river at Homeb, a Topnaar settlement about 20 km upstream, on Thursday evening. This information suggested that the river was likely to reach Gobabeb sometime in the night.

SDP presents findings for GSNL Committee

On 22 February 2014, four SDP participants presented the findings of their study for the Annual General Meeting for the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape (GSNL) Committee. They travelled down to Wolwedans Lodge in the NamibRand Nature Reserve for the weekend to give a brief presentation to the Committee and GSNL stakeholders about the results of SDP 17.
