Collaborating on clean-up in Windhoek

Heeding the call of the President, His Excellency Dr Hage G, Geingob, for a clean Namibia, Gobabeb and the Finnish Embassy organised an environmental awareness, rubbish collection and repurposing event at Dagbreek School in Windhoek.

After a discussion on the importance of keeping the environment clean and the problems with rubbish in the environment, especially plastic, the learners from the senior classes were issued gloves and collection bags, green for recyclables and black for waste, and out we went! We collected all rubbish encountered while moving around the perimeter of the school. A total distance of 1.2 kilometres was cleaned, including the pavement along Nelson Mandela Ave and the riverbed. Roughly 10 full bags were collected, the majority of which contained plastic. The recyclable items were disposed of in their relevant bins: plastic, paper, tins and glass. After a short break and refreshments, the learners were encouraged to create useful items from plastic bottles with some ideas and assistance from the Gobabeb crew. The most popular items were hanging plant pots, bottle cap mobiles and wasp traps.

The Gobabeb staff would like to extend a huge thank you to the Finnish Embassy for funding and to Dagbreek School for hosting this fun, educational event.
