The Gobabeb Training and Research Internship Programme (GTRIP) 2018

The Gobabeb Training and Research Internship Programme (GTRIP) is a six month long internship at Gobabeb. The aim is to foster young, promising Namibian Scientists by teaching them additional research skills and giving them hands on experience with a variety of research techniques in diverse fields.

GTRIP 2018 is off to a great start with five new interns and a range of exciting projects. Most of our new GTRIP interns arrived at Gobabeb in the middle of January. We welcome Halleluyah Shaanika, Esther Nambahu, Jonas Lipopila, Dortea Hamukoto and Zazapamue Hange to life at Gobabeb for the next six months.

The research projects they will be working on will are:

  • Looking at the fertility of top soil kept in storage by Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine
  • The distribution and ideal habitat for Lithops on the Hamilton range
  • The effectiveness of environmental education in changing public perceptions of non-charismatic animals
  • Assessing pod production of Acacia erioloba in the Kuiseb River
  • Using predawn water potential measurements of trees in the Kuiseb River to determine water availability for trees in Namibian ephemeral rivers

As always we would like to thank our main sponsor, Langer Heinrich Uranium (PTY) LTD, for making this programme possible as well as The Zoological Society of London for additional funding. The Gobabeb Research and Training Centre provides a huge investment in logistics, equipment, time and expert scientific guidance.

Keep following for new, exciting developments……
