Exchanging ideas regarding drought in Southern Africa

The Joint Parliamentary Assembly ACP–EUCommittee on Social Affairs and the Environment addressed the issue of drought afflicting southern Africa in a session on 11 June 2016 in Windhoek. Gobabeb’s Executive Director, Gillian Maggs-Kölling, joined the Environmental Commissioner

in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mr Teo Nghitila, and a representative of the FAO Regional Disaster Risk Reduction/Management Office for Southern Africa (SFS-REOSA), Dr Lewis Hove, in providing background information to stimulate the discussion by the parliamentarians in attendance. Gillian’s presentation addressed climate variability vs drought; the typology of drought (See Figure below); and appropriate coping strategies, including optimising science to improve drought evasion and/or endurance.
